OB TITLE: Lab, Research and Development Technician 

DIVISION: Telesystem 

DEPARTMENT: Product Development 

 

JOB SUMMARY 

  • The Lab, Research & Development, Lab Technician possesses an understanding of engineering lab standards and computer networking. Under the supervision of Product Development Team, the Lab Technician is responsible for executing lab testing procedures, creating and updating lab documentation, and the installation and setup of hardware and software platforms. The Lab Technician will develop an understanding of  network engineering, radio frequency networks, Internet Protocol switching, Internet Protocol routing, virtual server environments, and AC/DC power specifications. 

  • The Lab, Research & Development, Lab Technician reports directly to the Manager, Product Development. 

  • There are no direct reports to this position. 

 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 

The Lab, Research & Development, Lab Technician is responsible for: 

  • Executing approved test plans and recording results with an excellent attention to detail; 

  • Updating Lab documentation, drawings, and records in accordance with change control procedures; 

  • Collaborating with the Product Development Team to monitor the various lab networks to ensure that performance and availability are in line the expectations of our customers; 

  • Collaborating with other Engineering and Operations teams to ensure testing is executed to meet customer needs and expectations; 

  • Assisting with racking equipment, powering equipment, and making network connections; 

  • Working with networking equipment and testing software; 

  • Handling sensitive or confidential information with honesty and integrity; 

  • Learning how to work as part of the Product Development team to compile and analyze data, track test results, and support the company or clients; 

  • Taking on additional tasks or projects to learn more about Lab, Research, Development and Engineering Practices; 

  • Following and enforcing the Company’s policies and procedures, including the EEO guidelines and safety, at all times; 

  • Performing any miscellaneous department duties as needed. 

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS 

Education and Experience 

  • High School Diploma or GED - Required 

  • Collegiate level Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Science or related technical degree – Preferred 

  • Three (3) Years’ previous experience in a Technical field demonstrating any or all the following - Required 

  • Basic understanding of the setup and troubleshooting of enterprise switched and routed networks; 

  • Basic understanding of industry standard routing, switching, and internet protocols; 

  • Basic understanding of security solutions and protocols; 

  • Basic understanding of  GPON, DOCSIS, and SIP technologies; 

  • Basic understanding of  VM Ware, LINUX, UNIX, and Windows; 

  • Basic understanding of scripting and automation; 

  • Basic understanding of  MS Office, Multi-line phone, and other office equipment;

PHYSICAL DEMANDS  

May include walking, kneeling, standing, stooping, sitting, driving, hearing, talking, vision (close, distant, color, depth perception, adjust focus), and use of hands and fingers.  Light lifting of 50 lbs. may be occasionally needed. 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS 

  • The Lab, Research & Development, Lab Technician is a salaried, exempt position. The regular work hours are 40 hours, Monday – Friday.   The regular work hours may vary to accommodate the needs of the department. 

  • The Lab Research and Development Technician works in an automated business office environment with business office equipment including telephones, personal computers, copy machines, personal equipment such as iPads, tablets, and FAX equipment. 

  • The Lab Research and Development Technician, is required to drive on the job as needed and is subject to regular MVR checks.  He/she must maintain a valid driver’s license and maintain a driving record the meets Company standards for an insurable driver at all times.  Any time these conditions are not met must not drive on the job and must immediately report it to their manager.
