Job Description

The Construction Technician is responsible for performing duties related to the installation, operation, and maintenance of outside telephone and cable television plant; as well as placing and maintaining aerial coaxial and fiber optic cables, including splicing and activation and operates aerial and underground construction equipment. Reports to The Regional Construction Manager

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The Construction Technician is accountable for the following items:

  • Digging trenches and fill ditches; bury cables; place cable in trenches and through conduit.
  • Preparing underground system plant for repairs; including trenching, pot holing, backfill and repair or replacement of conduits, poles, risers or pedestals.
  • Installing rigid and semi rigid coaxial cable, including pole line construction and underground installation of rigid and semi rigid coaxial cable in conduit or direct buried.
  • Installing equipment used to house CATV equipment.  Ground plant or place rode or wire to serve as ground for future installations.
  • Performing traffic control and/or safety flagging as necessary.
  • Loading and unload cable equipment and tools.
  • Reading system prints and place cable according to prints.
  • Ability to work independently and to prioritize and organize effectively.
  • Safely operating all equipment essential to complete work, including but not limited to extension ladders and bucket trucks and staying within safety weight limits in inclement weather

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience

  • High School diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent combination of training and/or experience - required
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record - required
  • Formal electronics training, NCTI, SCTE Certification or equivalent - preferred
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work and lift minimum of 75 lbs. - required
  • Ability to work non-standard hours (evenings, weekends, etc.) - required
  • Customer relation skills - required
  • Team oriented
  • Attendance and punctuality are both essential functions of this position

  • Overtime may be required; On-call rotation may be required.
  • Ability to work non-standard hours (evenings, weekends, etc.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Walking, kneeling, standing, stooping, sitting, driving, hearing, talking, vision (close, distant, color, depth perception, adjust focus), and use of hands and fingers.  Light lifting of 75 lbs. is occasionally needed.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The Construction Technician is a full-time, non-exempt position. The regular workweek is typically 40 hours per week, with additional hours as needed including weekends, evenings and/or holidays.
  • The Construction Technician is required to drive on the job as needed and is subject to regular MVR checks. He/she must maintain a valid driver’s license and maintain a driving record the meets Company standards for an insurable driver at all times.  Any time these conditions are not met, he/she must not drive on the job and must immediately report it to his/her supervisor.
  • Must be able to obtain and continuously maintain compliance status for all applicable governmental regulations, including but not limited to, Department of Transportation (DOT) qualifications and Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) regulations.
  • The majority of the work being completed off company premises and outside in all weather conditions.
